AUDITIONS

The process of auditions will cover several months. The purpose for this intensive audition period is to ensure that the applicant has a clear understanding of the commitment required for the long-term cooperation ahead. During the Pre-Audition period, BCDC will offer the LEAP program to provide the candidates the opportunity to get to know the inner workings of the school by offering a  Pre-Audition Course, Orientation Days, Online Mentor Program and Open Days.

The audition process will be a great opportunity for all participants to discover the joys and challenges they will encounter throughout the three-year training cycle. Knowing this beforehand will allow the faculty and student to responsibly embark on the extremely demanding preparation for a career as a professional dancer. Applicants who are admitted into the program will be invited for a Summer Creative Week, where students and faculty will have an opportunity to get to know each other and lay the foundation for the beginning of the academic year in September 2025.

TO APPLY:
Fill and send in the application form
Filling in the form requires prior preparation, therefore, we kindly ask you to read the instructions carefully before completing the form.

Pre-audition online:
We encourage and prefer in-person participation during the audition process. However, for the first round, applicants may also opt for online participation. To apply for the online Pre-Audition, select ‘Online Pre-Audition’ on the application form. Applications are open and ongoing.

Final audition:
Dates will be announced.
Location: BCDC, 1036 Budapest, Perc utca 2.

Extra audition:
Date: around August 2025.
Participation is in person.

Location: BCDC, 1036 Budapest, Perc utca 2.

The purpose of the auditions is to find out:

  • how much experience the student have in traditional and innovative techniques: contemporary dance, improvisation, creative work, ballet, and folk dance basics.
  • the potential talent yet to be discovered for the student searching for a dance career in the field of contemporary dance.
  • whether the pedagogical path offered by the BCDC is suitable for the student, and whether the student’s present skill level and intellectual capacity can benefit from such an education.

During the audition process, the practical and aptitude test will be held simultaneously. The practical exam seeks to assess how much experience the applicant has in traditional and innovative dance techniques. The aptitude test examines whether the physical, mental, and psychological health of the student allows for participation in the course. During the audition procedure, Applicants may be given a “pass” or “fail” mark. A single ‘fail’ mark in the examination will disqualify the Applicant from further audition.

With the purpose of making an objective assessment, the faculty’s goals are to learn the applicant’s motivation and artistic interests. This information will help to map out possible pathways for development and growth in the areas of dance technique, physical training, and the creativity used in constructing dance works. This process will better inform the faculty on the possible future collaboration between applicants and the goals of the BCDC. The entire process will end with a conversation focusing on cultural and personal interests, especially in the fields of dance, theater, music and visual arts.

Q&A

How can I apply for the 2024 Contemporary Dance BA course?
The first step is to fill out the Academy’s registration form and send it in to us.

Pre-Audition? Audition?
The first round of the Audition is called Pre-Audition. After this round, the applicant may be invited to the second round (Final Audition). The final audition is by invitation only. It is essential for the Academy’s faculty to meet with the applicant at least two times before making a final decision for admission into the program.

What can I expect to happen at the audition?
The practical part of the audition consists of dance classes. The aptitude test will happen parallel to the practical test. Individual talks are also part of the process. Through these encounters we will be able to formulate a more complete picture of the applicant. This will help both parties decide whether to begin a mutual collaboration.

What types of dance classes are part of the practical part?
Contemporary dance, improvisation, ballet (basics), folk-dance (basics), creative tasks based on individual work, and the presentation of a solo work.

What does the aptitude test mean?
The aptitude test is part of the practical test. We observe if the mental, physical and the overall health status of the applicant makes it possible for participation in the course.

What can I expect to happen at the individual talks?
The main purpose of the individual talks is to have an opportunity for both sides to communicate and learn about each other through an exchange of thoughts, ideas, reflections and impressions during the dance classes and the essay topics sent in advance.

What language will the audition be held in?
The language of the audition is English.

How can I get to know the school better prior to the auditions?
We offer opportunities for personal encounters within the framework of dance courses. In addition, these courses will provide an opportunity to get to know the teachers who will be conducting the classes during the auditions. You can also find an Online Mentor Program, which enables us to get to know you as a creator and performer by sending us a short video of your dancing. You will receive feedback to your video based upon the approach that is representative of the Academy’s artistic perspective. It will also be possible to have a look at our FB, Instagram and YouTube accounts where you can get additional information regarding the school’s program as well as everyday life in the school and in the city of Budapest.
